What is your business vision?

Are you driven by your customers and their desires and and needs or by your own needs?

Is the goal of your business to help yourself or to help your customers?

If you are in business just to help yourself, you may make some money today and you may make some money tomorrow, but there is definitely a ceiling on how far your business can develop and grow.

I live in a very remote area outside of a mountain town in Northern California.

Within 10 miles of my house there is only one small grocery store and one restaurant.

For the last 20 years, there have been 4 owners of the little grocery store and 5 owners of the restaurant.

None of the previous owners have been able to make a go of either small businesses.

In the last 5 years however, both businesses have taken off and are doing great!  There are customers at both of these businesses constantly!

Now in the last 2 years, "economic conditions" around our neck of the woods have been very bad as in most places.

Our house values have dropped by as much as 60% (I know mine has for sure because I checked with a broker).

Shops are closing in town every day.

Now during that time these two little stores have been going gangbusters.

What do you think is the difference?

What are these businesses doing differently?

How are they surviving and thriving while almost every other business is flat or going down the tubes?

I'm going to make you wait for this and think about it.

Tune in tomorrow and I'll answer the question.

Local Business Marketing Mission Job 1

Last time I was saying that most business owners make the mistake of limiting their marketing efforts to making money.

Making money is obviously the point of being in business… but "what kind of money?"

What do I mean by "kind of money?"

Well there's money that comes in once and money that comes in over and over again.  Which would you prefer?

Most people focus on getting a "sale."

They think in terms of "having a sale" or "running a promotion."

I want you to think differently… after all if you can go to the effort of making a sale wouldn't it be nice if the same effort paid you over and over again?

Instead of a "promotion" I want you to think of what you are doing as a "campaign."

The purpose of a campaign is to build a relationship… one which has as its goal to win your customer's lifetime business and loyalty.

If your marketing or promotional activity succeeds in changing the way your customers think about your business, product or service as part of their life and integrated into their world…

And they really see you and your business as valuable to them…

Then you have created a real business, not just a sale.

The difference between a real business and a sale is that a real business doesn't go away tomorrow after the "Christmas sale."

The effect of this kind of marketing – focused on your customer and your relationship with your customer – is that you have not only someone who patronizes your business, but someone who believes in you and your business and will spread the word to others.

This results in more profits for you and a great feeling of why and how you are in business.

Traditional advertising sucks

Traditional approaches to advertising suck… why do I say that?

Because what most local business owners have done is simply to be the slave and monkey to their yellow pages rep, their newspaper sales rep, the radio rep.

Don’t be a slave and don’t be passive.

Now is the time to go on a crusade for your business.

The difference is that in a crusade campaign you are actually trying to convert people – to your product or service.

If you are simply trying to make money, you are only doing a small part of what you can be doing.
Making money is great, but as you’ll see, the purpose of Local Ad Power type advertising is not just to make a few bucks, but to generate lifetime customers.

Lifetime customers… customers who keep coming back, keep referring, believe in you and what you do and are converts to your business and to you.

This is a whole different way of seeing things.

It’s actually a big responsibility to your customers or clients.
You are making an oath of delivering true value to them, and they are becoming loyal to you and your business.

This is the way to create a true lifetime business, not just a temporary one.

Tell the Yellow Pages ad guy to shove it...this local business did

Go Ahead….Tell the Yellow Pages ad guy to shove it

He never did you any good.

Neither did the radio ads salesman.

Neither did the newspaper ads salesman.

The only thing they did was rip you off. No, I’m heart-attack serious.

You may think well shucks that’s how we advertise hereabouts.

Yeah maybe but it’s dumb-ass.

Unless you absolutely know what you are doing, you are getting robbed blind in your promotions.

Let me prove it.

Can you tell me the conversion rates on your last 4 advertising campaigns?

Do you know what a “conversion rate” is? Don’t be embarrassed, I didn’t either.

Now I do and knowing it and how that works exploded my businesses.

Can you tell me exactly how many people will come into your shop as a result of an ad you just took out?

I mean can you tell me how many people will come in next Tuesday?

No?

Then you are pissing in the wind.

Time to get careful with your cash.

Time to get effective. There’s not a moment nor a penny to spare.

Time to hire a hundred sales people and not pay them. (What? Yes, you read that right).

Time to know exactly what you are getting for your moolah.

Time to get over the “high season – low season” sickness in your business.

For many of us there’s no such thing. We just go on making money all year…. Nice.

Here’s how

Don’t get mad, get even
