Are You Hunting Blind in the Dark With Your Local Advertising?

What do you use to do your advertising?

Do you spend money on Yellow Page ads?

Do you buy spots on the radio?

Do you use ValPaks?

Do you buy space in the newspaper?

Probably you use these methods… one or all of them.

However if you are like most business owners, you might as well be taking the money and flushing it right down the toilet.

You'd have more fun blowing it in Vegas.  And at least you'd be having fun (until you see the credit card statement).

We know one guy who is spending $34,689 a year on Yellow Page Ads and when we asked him "exactly how much of your traffic comes in from Yellow Page ads" he had no answer other than "well we think it works."

It sure is a pretty ad :-) … so many pretty colors… so beautifully designed… so freaking useless.

Of course if you are going to shell out $35k a year, you'd better at least pretend in your own mind that it's a good investment.

The same thing happens with radio spots, newspaper ads, classifieds, local or regional advertising.

You buy those spots because, well, because that's what people do, and because you are used to doing that.

It's "the way things are done."

What are you getting for your hard-earned money?

Maybe something, maybe "F-all" (probably the latter).

But you don't know because you aren't using measuring or testing techniques.

You literally have no eay of knowing if your advertising efforts are working or failing other than guessing.

That's why we call it hunting blind in the dark.  

You are just firing into the darkness and hoping you hit something.

First, here's the mindset you must have.

This is absolutely essential.

If you are going to play a sport, say baseball, you have to know a few fundamentals before you can even get in the game.

You must know bases, positions, how to throw, how to run, how to hit and the rules at a very minimum, right?

So here are the fundamentals of business advertising.

Once we've talked about this I'll show you how to apply it into your offline and online marketing

I put it into an acronym called 

"C.U.S.T.O.M.E.R.S."


C ustomer
U nique value
S urvey
T ease
O ffer
M easure
E valuate
R e-test
S pend wisely

 

C for Customer.  


Your focus needs to be not on your product but your customer.

Who is your ideal customer?  

What do they really want?

Who are they?

Male? Female? What age? Ethnicity?  Customs?  Values?

What are they dreaming about at night or worried about?

What problems do they have that YOU have the best answer and solution to solving?

This focus applies exactly the same whether you are promoting offline or online.

How do you become the “go to” local business in your industry?

Let's say you sell auto and home insurance.

Someone new moves to town and asks a local resident, "where do I get my home insurance around here?"
Then they ask another person the same question, and then another person.
Are they going to hear your name 7 or 8 or even 9 times out of 10?
Will you get that referral?
And what will the local resident say about you?
What words will they use to describe you and your business?
Does what they say about you match what you intend or hope they will say about you?

What's your specialty?  What are you known for?

What do you want to be known for?
Many high priced marketing consultants charge a huge amount of money to help you define your "USP"…
In reality you don't even need to know about that and you don't need a pricey consultant for that.
Just answer those questions above and you are ready to go on to the next step which is how specifically to get this "name" or "presence" out  to your whole community.

Local Business Customer Service: Your Customer Satisfaction Advantage (part 1)

Your CSA or Customer Satisfaction Advantage should be the core of everything in your business.

I've talked about the CSA many times in previous blog posts and articles.

Let me reiterate here.  

Most business owners focus on products and price.

These are important but not nearly as important as your CSA.

Let me prove this.

Put two businesses side by side selling the same product or service.

If their product is the same or almost the same price (and you should never campaign on the basis of price, which I explain in other posts)… one business will probably do better than the other one.

You can't say it's because of location.  You can't say it's price or better products.

In one case in a large city I was visiting, there were two Starbucks across the street from one another.  Identical twins.

Except that one was crowded and the other one had 2 customers in it.

I decided to go get a cup of coffee in each.  

Same price and basically same location.

Yet there was a difference, definitely.

In the one with no customers, the employees were dour and hardly said a word.    The two customers that were in there looked like they were reading poetry.

In the crowded one, they smiled at you brightly, asked you how your day was going, and gave you a little chocolate ball with your coffee if you wanted one.  People were yucking it up at the tables.

Which business would you rather own?

If I were writing a CSA for the second Starbucks, I might write something like "We lift your spirits with a smile and a great cup of coffee."

Now wouldn't you go into my coffee shop rather than the dreary one?

Most business owners have the idea that if they could just find that better mousetrap people would knock down their door to buy it.

Now that could be true to a certain extent, but have you ever tried to invent a better mousetrap?

Obviously I don't mean an actual mousetrap, but whatever would be the "next big thing" in your particular business… the brand new product or way of delivering service.

First of all it's nearly impossible to build a better mousetrap no matter what your field.

And if you focus on that it's very difficult to ALSO focus on building your business.

But there IS a way around this.

Using this way you can build a better mousetrap AND build your business.

You focus on what I've been calling the CSA or Customer Satisfaction Advantage.

You take the wonderful products or services you already offer and then spend quality time discovering and honing what it is that you do and what the most important benefit of it is to your customer or client: then you have a better mousetrap.  Or the same mousetrap but one which people can relate to better.

You help them see that they can't – or don't want to – live without you.

For example if you have a health food store, you don't just sell health food.  Anyone can do that.

What you sell is feeling good about yourself because you are eating well.

Because you are using the right supplements.

So for example every Tuesday at noon, you have a little morning health food seminar.  Doesn't have to be a big deal, just 15-30 minutes, but people are invited to join you, have some tea, try a sample of a product, and get some great information about how to eat healthy.

Give them a sample and tell them all about it.

"New Health Tuesdays" you could call it, or something even better.

The whole idea is to increase the value of having a customer relationship with you.

When you do that you have actually built a better mousetrap.

Something which will build your business the rest of your life and build great connections with your customers who will stick with you for life.

Why Your Local Business and Not Someone Else’s?

Why should a customer or client patronize your local business rather than your competitor's?

Because you really need the money? LOL

What is going to cause a customer or client to choose you… to return again and again, and tell others about your business?
You might think it is because your prices are better.

That might get you ONE sale but then you have to grind away at the next sale and the next and meantime make lower profits.

You might think it's convenience or the unique products you have.

Well if that's all it took someone could move in next door and have the same products and do the same as you, right?

It's not any of those things.

It's a combination of things you may think of only once in a while, but you need to think of every day.

What is the Customer Satisfaction Advantage you have or as I call it, your CSA?

What makes your business attract customers and keep them coming back?

What do they get in your store or office they really can't get anywhere else?

Well it had better be something important and valuable or they will go somewhere else in a heartbeat.

In the next few days or weeks we are going to be talking about your "Marketing Presence"

Don't have a heart attack when you hear the word "Marketing."

It just means the "message" people receive when they deal with your business.

What is that message?

Is it well we are here but we are a little too busy to help you out?  :-)

That's exactly what I experienced at a parts store I went to a couple of days ago.

There were 4 guys behind the counter and they made no effort to treat me as a valued customer.

Well, F them.

There are other parts stores.

See what I mean?
